All creams, gels and patches mentioned are medical devices and should be used on the advice of a doctor.

Scars can be a nuisance: they can pull and itch, get in the way mechanically, and can be a cosmetic problem. The plastic surgeon tries to plan a scar so that it is not noticeable. Through refined suturing techniques and good postoperative wound treatment, a scar will in most cases fade neatly into a thin, light line. Unfortunately, this is not the case in all situations. Scars can also have arisen after an accident or injury. If a scar does not heal nicely, something can often be done about it.

This does not always have to be done surgically, but can also be approached in other ways. This page is about treating scars with silicone patches and gels. Make an appointment for advice on which scar treatment is best for you.

There are many different types of silicone scar patches on the market. Because we have achieved good results with the use of the Scarban patches, we at Kliniek het Bolwerk recommend these.

How does wound healing work?

When the body notices that there is a break in the skin barrier, an injury, the body is prompted to repair this wound. To this end, a cascade reaction is initiated by the body. Factors supplied via the blood will first close the wound and form a scab through the clotting of factors. Once the acute problem of covering the wound has been resolved, the body moves on to a more permanent covering with more stable scar tissue.

Eventually the body receives a signal that the scar is stable and the barrier function has been restored, and that the stiff scar tissue can be broken down again and converted into more supple skin. This process can take months, up to as long as a year. In the beginning it is therefore important that there are no factors that disrupt this delicate process of wound healing, otherwise an ugly scar threatens. Long-standing open wounds, inflammation, but also a lack of nutrients can cause disruptions in the healing process.

How does a silicone scar patch work?

There are no healing factors in the silicone patch, so how does this process work?
By covering a scar with a silicone sheet or gel, the moisture loss through the scar is limited. The body then stops supplying healing factors, which means the scar becomes stable more quickly. When the body notices that the scar is stable, it receives a signal that the repair reaction can be wound down, after which the scar becomes less red, causes less itching or irritation, and settles down again.

Reimbursement?

Sometimes silicone patches are reimbursed by the health insurer. Ask whether this is the case for you during the consultation.

Consult

Because the treatment of an abnormal scar is tailor-made, it is not possible to give general advice via this web page. There are several ways to treat a scar, and these depend on the phase the scar is in. One scar benefits from surgical treatment, while another scar actually responds better to being left alone. What works for one person may have no effect for another. In short, for good, personal and tailor-made advice, make an appointment and we will discuss the options together.

Read here which creams, gels and patches we recommend for the best scar care.
