Almost all blood pressure medication can simply be continued around an eyelid correction. With one specific group, the so-called &#8216;non-selective beta blockers&#8217;, some extra attention is needed because of the local anaesthetic we use.  <\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-aa53687 elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"aa53687\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h2 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">Which medication does this concern?\n<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-bcece18 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"bcece18\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<ul><li>Beta blockers: metoprolol (Selokeen), bisoprolol (Emcor), atenolol, and the non-selective propranolol (Inderal)<\/li><li>ACE inhibitors: lisinopril, enalapril, perindopril<\/li><li>Angiotensin II antagonists (ARBs): losartan, valsartan, candesartan<\/li><li>Calcium antagonists: amlodipine, nifedipine<\/li><li>Water tablets (diuretics): hydrochlorothiazide, chlortalidone, furosemide<\/li><\/ul>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-da40fd3 elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"da40fd3\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h2 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">Why is this relevant?<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-75e2201 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"75e2201\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>A well-regulated blood pressure is important to limit the risk of a haematoma after an eyelid correction. Research shows that keeping blood pressure strictly under control around the procedure strongly reduces the risk of secondary bleeding [1,2]. <\/p><p>With local anaesthetic we often use a small amount of adrenaline (epinephrine) to limit bleeding. With the use of non-selective beta blockers, such as propranolol, this combination can in rare cases cause a temporary rise in blood pressure, because the blood-vessel-widening action of adrenaline is blocked while the vessel-narrowing effect remains intact [3,4,5]. <\/p><p>In most people who use metoprolol, bisoprolol, ACE inhibitors, ARBs, calcium antagonists or water tablets, this plays little or no role, as these are &#8216;cardioselective&#8217; products, or products without this effect [3,6].<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-f5f25c1 elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"f5f25c1\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h2 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">Our protocol at Kliniek het Bolwerk<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-1f6c04f elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"1f6c04f\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">1. Continuing medication<\/h3>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-c32fbae elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"c32fbae\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>Blood pressure medication is simply continued on the day of the procedure; stopping can actually have a counterproductive effect [2].<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-629de7f elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"629de7f\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">3. Adjusted anaesthetic with propranolol etc.<\/h3>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-6c70c7f elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"6c70c7f\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>With the use of non-selective beta blockers such as propranolol, we can, if necessary, use a lower concentration of adrenaline and administer the anaesthetic calmly and in small quantities, with attention to your blood pressure and heart rate during the procedure [4,5].<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-226fbef elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"226fbef\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">4.
