An tummy tuck, also known as abdominoplasty, is a plastic surgery procedure that helps remove excess skin and fat around the abdomen and tighten the abdominal wall. This procedure is particularly suitable for people who suffer from:
Important to know: a tummy tuck is not a substitute for weight loss. A stable weight is necessary for optimal and lasting results.

A tummy tuck strengthens the abdominal wall and removes excess, hanging skin. After the procedure, a surgical scar is created that is placed low in the lower fold of the abdomen and runs the full width. A small scar is also visible around the navel.
After about 14 days, after checking, scars can be cared for with body lotion, vitamin E oil or Alhydran cream. Avoid exposure to sunlight and tanning beds, as this can affect the scars.
The result is long-lasting, but may change with weight gain or new pregnancies.
The plastic surgeon will discuss your symptoms, wishes and medical history. You receive a personalized treatment plan and explanations about the procedure, risks and recovery. Pictures are taken for the medical file.
You will receive instructions to quit smoking (at least 6 weeks in advance), avoid alcohol consumption (starting 2 days in advance) and stay sober from midnight. Have compression garments ready and follow other instructions.
The procedure is performed under general anesthesia and takes 2 to 2.5 hours. Excess skin is removed, the abdominal wall is strengthened and the navel is repositioned. Sometimes drains are placed to drain wound fluid.
After surgery, you will wear a pressure corset and remain for observation. You will receive pain relief and assistance in getting up. With a minor surgery, you may be able to go home the same day.
There is a check-up within 7-14 days. Wound strips are removed and you receive advice on scar care. Any drains will be removed as soon as possible. Contact me immediately in case of complications such as redness, fever or swelling.

A tummy tuck is not an alternative to losing weight. You must be stable at your target weight for at least three months. The procedure is not recommended for certain conditions, such as diabetes or when using medications that affect wound healing.
If you plan to become pregnant, postpone the surgery until after your last pregnancy because the abdominal skin may sag again.
As with any surgical procedure, there are potential risks:

I was very well looked after, and everything was explained to me step by step. The final result is exactly what I had hoped for, and I definitely do not regret the treatment. Recovery during the first week was quite tough, but after just one week I was already healing very well. The end result is exactly what I had envisioned for years. I am very satisfied.

A tummy tuck is rarely covered by Dutch health insurance companies, even for scar repair after a medical procedure.
Some supplemental insurance policies cover surgery after extensive bariatric surgery or substantial weight reduction, but strict criteria apply, such as excess skin hanging halfway down the thigh. Consult your health insurer if in doubt or submit a claim.
Only an initial consultation that does not lead to treatment.
Recovery after a tummy tuck takes an average of six weeks. This may be slightly faster for some people and slightly longer for others. Because it is a major surgery, a good recovery period is crucial for a smooth and uncomplicated course. After six weeks, you can usually resume activities such as lifting and exercising.
An important condition for reimbursement by insurance companies is that you must not be overweight. In order for recovery after surgery to be smooth and without complications, it is essential to be as close to your target weight as possible. An increased BMI increases the risk of complications during and after surgery, both plastic surgery and anesthesia.
Keep all operated areas clean by showering daily. Water, shampoo and soap may be used over the wounds, but rinse well to avoid soap residue. Pat the skin dry with a clean towel and push any shifted wound strips back into place. Then put the corset back on. Also use this time to wash the corset.
No, scars heal differently depending on the spot on the body and external factors. Therefore, it is not possible to guarantee in advance that scars will be barely visible.
The corset reduces accumulation of wound fluid under the skin and provides support to the abdomen. This promotes optimal wound healing and aids in proper recovery.
The corset must be worn day and night for six weeks for optimal results.
For the first two to three days, limit your activities to resting in bed with your legs slightly elevated. Getting up to visit the toilet or have a light meal, for example, is allowed. Avoid activities that put pressure on the abdomen. After this period, light activities are allowed, but be alert for pain or fatigue. Only after six weeks can you resume normal activities and sports.
Smoking affects blood vessels by vasoconstriction, which significantly delays wound healing and increases the risk of complications. Nicotine maintains this effect for about six hours after each cigarette. For optimal recovery, it is essential to stop smoking or e-smoking at least six weeks before surgery.
