The treatment process

Step 1: Making an appointment for a consultation

At Kliniek het Bolwerk, you have several options for making an appointment for a consultation.

You can make an appointment online at a date and time that is convenient for you. You can also send an e-mail to info@kliniekhetbolwerk.nl or a WhatsApp message to 06-49899167 with your name and the text “I would like to make an appointment for a consultation.”

You can also make an appointment by calling 023 583 74 05 during office hours.

Step 2: The consultation

At our initial consultation, we will ask you to fill out your medical history, including a current medication list and allergy history. Think carefully about any questions and concerns, and don’t forget to bring your identification.

During the consultation, we discuss realistic options, including alternatives. The photos taken are securely stored in your medical record. We take ample time to discuss your medical history and discuss treatment in detail.

We also openly discuss the risks, possible complications and the aftercare process.

Step 3: After the consultation

You receive:

The eyelid surgery brochure.
A quote with the treatment proposal and your photos.
If you agree to the quote, we will schedule an appointment for treatment.
Please ensure that payment is received in full by us before the scheduled date.
You will receive a treatment agreement; we would like to receive it signed in return.

Step 4: Making an appointment for treatment

Find a convenient date in your calendar when you have a week of no social obligations. It is important to keep this period free for optimal recovery.

Should anything change in your medical records in the meantime, please inform us immediately. That way we can make sure everything is well prepared for the day of treatment.

Step 5: A few days before the treatment

If indicated during the consultation, discontinue medication.
Get groceries well in advance and arrange transportation for the return trip.
Prepare small packets of frozen peas for cooling after handling.
For 7 days, keep your calendar as empty as possible.

By carefully following these steps beforehand, you will ensure a smooth recovery period and minimize any post-treatment discomfort.

Step 6: One day before treatment

A day before surgery, it is important to take the following steps:

Is your calendar empty?
Are the groceries done?
Has any help been arranged?
Has transportation home been arranged?
Have sunglasses ready for after the treatment.

Step 7: The day of treatment

Showering and washing hair.
Do not use creams or makeup.
Come to the clinic no more than 15 minutes before the appointment.
The eyelid surgery takes about 60 minutes, then you’ll stay with us for another 15 minutes before you can go home.
Make sure someone picks you up after the procedure.
Take it easy for the first 3 days. This is to prevent blueness (hematomas).
Cool your eyelids regularly after treatment, 15 to 20 minutes every hour until you go to sleep.
Smaller activities such as reading or watching television are fine.

Step 8: The first days after treatment

The eyelids are slightly swollen and possibly slightly blue on the first day.
On the second day, the swelling increases and becomes bluer, but then the swelling rapidly decreases.
Leave the wound strips in place; they hold the sutures in place.
Take it easy for the first 3 days; after that, light
work will resume.
Working from home at the computer is quite possible.

Step 9: One week after treatment

On the appointed date you will return for the removal of the sutures.
The eyes may still be slightly swollen, but this will go away.
Lubricate the scars with a cream containing vitamin E, 6 times a day.
Makeup may be used again.
Avoid excessive sunlight on the scars to prevent dark discoloration.

Step 10: 2 weeks after treatment

You can resume all activities including sports
The swelling has largely subsided

Step 11: 10 - 15 years after treatment

After 10 to 15 years, the symptoms may return. In that case, a new eyelid surgery may be a possible solution.

It is important to schedule another consultation and discuss treatment options with a specialist.

I am David Jairath, plastic surgeon since 2004. I studied Medicine at the University of Amsterdam where I also did my specialization as a plastic surgeon. During my training I did several internships at home and abroad.

After my training, I started working at the Spaarne Hospital Hoofddorp. Nowadays this is the Spaarne Gasthuis with 3 locations in Hoofddorp, Haarlem Zuid and Haarlem Noord.

In hospital practice, I preformed breast reconstructions in conjunction with general surgery, trauma (plastic surgery), hand surgery and general plastic surgery. In the private clinic (Plastic Cosmetic Center Spaarne) I further specialized in cosmetic surgery.

The years of experience I gained there I now use for my clients at Kliniek het Bolwerk.

Ik ben voor de 2e keer geholpen aan een ooglidcorrectie door dr. Jairath de 1e keer was 17 jaar geleden .
Nu 3 weken geleden weer en ben weer heel blij met het resultaat. Het ziet er nu weer een stuk frisser uit. Hij is een zeer vriendelijke en kundige chirurg en je voelt je erg op je gemak bij de intake en behandeling.

Eind december een boven-ooglidcorrectie laten uitvoeren.
De intake en behandeling uitermate deskundig en het resultaat is geweldig.

Why do you charge higher rates than some other clinics?

As a plastic surgeon, I have years of specialized training and experience in aesthetic surgery, including eyelid surgery. This ensures not only a safe procedure, but also high-quality cosmetic results.

Choosing a plastic surgeon means investing in quality, precision and peace of mind, a difference that goes beyond price.

What are the risks and complications?

As with any surgery, there are a small number of risks associated with eyelid surgery. For example, there may be temporary swelling and bruising around the eyes. However, this is normal after such procedures and disappears on its own within a few days to a week.

Scarring and asymmetry of the eyes are less common. We perform the procedure meticulously to minimize the risk of side effects. With proper aftercare, the risk of complications is very low.

Will my eyelid surgery be covered by insurance?

Eyelid surgery is usually not covered by basic insurance (in The Netherlands) because it is a purely cosmetic procedure. Some supplementary insurance policies do offer coverage. It is wise to check whether your insurer will cover this procedure if it is medically necessary, for example, in cases of poor vision due to swollen or drooping eyelids.

Why doesn't Kliniek het Bolwerk show "before and after" photos?

At Kliniek het Bolwerk, we do not share “before and after” photos of our eyelid surgery procedures. We do this out of respect for the privacy of our clients. Although we like to show the results of our treatments, we are not allowed to share medical information and photos without permission.

However, clients can discuss their own before and after photos with us during their intake. This way we like to give an honest picture of what clients can expect from us. This without going into individual treatments without permission.

How long is the recovery process?

The recovery process after eyelid surgery usually only takes about a week. In the first few days, there will be swelling and bruising around the eyes. This is normal after such a procedure. Take it easy for the first 3 days.

After about a week, these symptoms are almost gone. After a week, the sutures are removed. At that point, you will be fully on your feet again, although of course the results will take some time to appear.

Within 2-3 weeks you can already see most of the final results. Typically, our clients recover quickly.
