Bunny lines

Bunny lines are the fine wrinkles that form across the bridge of the nose when you smile or frown. They are entirely natural, but they can draw more attention than you would like, especially when they are deep or become more pronounced quickly.

Several treatments can soften bunny lines. Below we explain what bunny lines are, what causes them, which treatments are available, and what you can expect from the results and possible risks of a treatment.

What are bunny lines?

Bunny lines are the small horizontal wrinkles that form on the sides of the nose when you smile or frown. Some people find them charming, others find them bothersome. They appear when the muscles along the sides of the nose (the nasalis muscles) contract, usually when you laugh, squint or frown.

Bunny lines are generally considered a normal feature of facial expression, but they can be more pronounced in some people, which is when they start to stand out.

What causes bunny lines?

Bunny lines develop through the repeated movement of the muscles around the nose. The nasalis muscles contract when we laugh or make facial expressions. As we get older, the skin around the nose loses elasticity, which makes these wrinkles more visible.

Genetic factors, sun exposure and influences such as smoking or a lack of skincare can speed up the development of bunny lines. Some people also tense the muscles around their nose without realising it, which makes the lines more pronounced.

Which treatments are available for bunny lines?

Several effective options can soften or largely remove bunny lines. Which treatment suits you depends on the depth of the wrinkles and on what you want to achieve.

Risks

As with any cosmetic treatment, treating bunny lines carries risks. With botox, side effects such as temporary swelling, bruising or asymmetry of the nose can occur.

In rare cases the result can look overtreated, where the muscles relax too much and the expression becomes unnatural. With dermal fillers there is a small risk of swelling, redness or small lumps under the skin, although this is usually temporary.

Laser treatments can occasionally cause skin irritation or mild redness, which normally clears up quickly. Consulting an experienced doctor is essential to keep the risk of complications to a minimum.

Can I prevent bunny lines?

Bunny lines cannot be prevented entirely, because they result from natural facial movement and ageing. There are steps you can take to slow their development.

Applying sunscreen around the nose helps prevent sun damage, which accelerates skin ageing. Not smoking, reducing stress and caring for your skin with moisturising products keep the skin elastic and healthy, which makes wrinkles less visible.

Being aware of habitual facial movements such as frowning or squinting also puts less strain on the muscles, which slows the formation of bunny lines.

Frequently asked questions about bunny lines

Bunny lines are caused by repeated movement of the nasalis muscle along the sides of the nose. Every time you laugh, frown or make certain facial expressions, this muscle contracts, which over time creates fine wrinkles.

As the skin ages and becomes less elastic, these wrinkles can grow deeper and more visible. Genetic predisposition and factors such as smoking or sun exposure also contribute to the formation of bunny lines.

The most effective way to soften bunny lines is a botox treatment. Botox relaxes muscle activity, which makes the wrinkles less visible. For deeper wrinkles, fillers can be used to add volume to the skin.

Laser treatments support skin renewal and collagen production, which firms the skin. Good skincare with retinol and hyaluronic acid also contributes to smoother skin.

With a botox treatment the first results are usually visible within 3 to 7 days, with the optimal effect after two weeks. The result lasts 3 to 6 months on average, after which a repeat treatment is needed to maintain the effect.

Fillers can last 6 to 12 months, depending on the type of filler and your skin type. Laser treatments work more gradually, but can give a lasting improvement in skin texture.

Botox and fillers are safe treatments when carried out by an experienced doctor. Possible side effects are temporary redness, swelling or small bruises at the injection site.

In rare cases overtreatment can lead to an unnatural appearance or slight asymmetry, which usually resolves on its own. Laser treatments can cause temporary redness or mild flaking. An experienced doctor keeps the risks to a minimum and works towards a natural result.
