What are skin tags (fibromas)?

Fibromas, also called skin tags, are small, benign protrusions of connective tissue. They are common in adults and are usually skin-coloured or light brown. Their size varies from a few millimetres to about a centimetre.

You mainly find them in places where skin rubs against skin or where clothing chafes, such as on the neck, in the armpits, under the breasts or on the torso. Although skin tags are medically harmless, they can become sensitive or be experienced as bothersome. Think of discomfort when wearing jewellery or clothing, or while shaving.

Why have skin tags removed

Why have skin tags removed?

Skin tags are harmless, but they can get in the way. They sometimes become irritated or bleed, especially if they are in a place with a lot of friction. They can also be sensitive and in some people even become inflamed.

In addition, many people find them cosmetically bothersome, especially if they are visible on the neck, torso or under the armpits. This can cause insecurity or affect your everyday comfort.

At Kliniek het Bolwerk you can have skin tags removed safely and carefully. We always treat with attention to comfort, a quick recovery and the best possible result for your skin.

I am Drs. David Jairath, plastic surgeon. After studying Medicine, I completed my specialization as a plastic surgeon at the University of Amsterdam. During this training I did internships at home and abroad.

During my career, I have worked in both hospitals and private clinics. My background includes both reconstructive and cosmetic surgery, ranging from breast reconstruction to general plastic surgery procedures.

I now have more than 15 years of experience in removing skin abnormalities. I now use my broad knowledge at Kliniek het Bolwerk. Here I offer my services for cosmetic removal of, for example, birthmarks, cysts and naevi.

Thanks to my extensive background, I know how to perform each procedure carefully and with an eye for optimal results. The client is central to this.

Skin tag removal rates

The price of removing skin tags depends on your wishes and on what we discuss during the consultation. To always give you the right information, we keep all rates up to date in one central place. That way you can be sure you are seeing the most recent prices, including the first consultation.

On our rates page you will find the complete and current overview of all treatments.

What can you expect from the treatment?

During the consultation, plastic surgeon David Jairath looks at the skin tags and discusses whether removal makes sense. If it does, the treatment can often take place straight away. Depending on the size and location, this is done with or without local anaesthetic.

The skin tags are removed safely with a sterile instrument, such as small forceps, a small blade or by coagulation (heating). Afterwards, usually only a small wound remains, which heals by itself.

In most cases the skin settles again after a few days and little or no scar remains visible. The treatment is short, accessible and requires little recovery time.

Who the treatment is suitable for

Who is the treatment suitable for?

The treatment is suitable for anyone who is bothered by skin tags and finds them troublesome. This may involve skin tags that are visible, get in the way or regularly become irritated.

You are eligible if the skin tags are easy to feel or see, your skin is otherwise healthy and you are in good general health. If you are looking for a quick and safe treatment without a long recovery, this procedure is usually suitable too.

During the consultation you discuss your complaints and wishes with plastic surgeon David Jairath. You always receive honest and expert advice, tailored to your situation.

Frequently asked questions about skin tag removal

In most cases the treatment is well tolerated. Small skin tags can often be removed without anaesthetic. You will then feel at most a brief moment of discomfort, comparable to removing a small spot on the skin.

For larger skin tags or if the area is sensitive, we use a local anaesthetic. This means you feel nothing during the treatment and can lie there relaxed. The procedure itself takes only a few minutes. Afterwards you may experience slight redness or a stinging feeling, but this usually fades quickly.

We always make sure your treatment is comfortable and discuss beforehand what you can expect.

The small wounds that form after removing skin tags are small and usually heal within a few days to two weeks. The skin may be a little red or sensitive straight after the treatment, but this recovers quickly.

You can usually resume your daily activities straight away. We do recommend keeping the skin clean and dry during the first few days and not rubbing the treated area too much. It is best to postpone swimming, intensive sport or sunbathing until the skin has fully recovered.

With good aftercare and a little rest, you give your skin the chance to heal nicely and calmly.

In most cases the spots heal without visible scars. The wounds are small and with good care hardly anything remains visible. It is important, though, not to irritate the skin or expose it to sunlight in the first few days.

Do you have sensitive skin or a tendency to scarring? Then we discuss this beforehand during the consultation. We take this into account when choosing the method and give you tailored advice on scar care.

After the treatment we are also there for you if you have questions or would like extra aftercare. Everything is aimed at the best possible end result.

Yes, that is certainly possible. Many people have several skin tags in different places on the body. During the consultation we assess how many can be removed in one treatment.

Depending on the number, we agree whether it is desirable to treat everything in one go or to spread it over several sessions. We take into account the treatment time, recovery and your comfort.

For a larger number of skin tags we can also use a package price. We discuss this calmly with you during the consultation, so you know exactly where you stand.

Removing skin tags is almost always classed as a cosmetic treatment. This means the costs are usually not reimbursed by basic health insurance. Only in case of medical necessity or in special cases may reimbursement from supplementary insurance be possible.

Unsure about reimbursement? Then contact your health insurer beforehand. You can also indicate during the consultation that you want to check this. We make sure you receive all the information, so you can make a well-informed decision yourself.

At Kliniek het Bolwerk we are always transparent about the costs, with no surprises afterwards.
