Common complaints with skin lumps

Lumps on the skin are usually not dangerous, but they can cause discomfort. Many people find that lumps catch on clothing or jewellery. Sometimes they cause itching or a burning sensation, especially in warm weather or with friction. They can also make the skin look uneven or blemished, which can affect your self-confidence.

Drs. D Jairath

I am Drs. David Jairath, plastic surgeon. After studying Medicine, I completed my specialization as a plastic surgeon at the University of Amsterdam. During this training I did internships at home and abroad.

During my career, I have worked in both hospitals and private clinics. My background includes both reconstructive and cosmetic surgery, ranging from breast reconstruction to general plastic surgery procedures.

Who the treatment is suitable for

Are lump removals covered by health insurance?

Removing skin lumps is usually not reimbursed, because it is often a cosmetic treatment. The procedure then counts as 'non-medically necessary care' and is therefore not eligible for reimbursement from basic health insurance.

Only with medical complaints such as recurring inflammation, bleeding or severe irritation can an exception sometimes be made. Always contact your health insurer beforehand to ask about the options within your policy.

Frequently asked questions about lump removal

The treatment is usually well tolerated and in many cases even virtually pain-free. Small lumps can often be removed without anaesthetic, because only superficial tissue is involved and the procedure is over quickly.

For larger or sensitive lumps we use a local anaesthetic, so you feel nothing during the treatment. At most you may feel light pressure or touch. Afterwards the skin may be a little sensitive for a short time, but this usually fades quickly.

Our plastic surgeon always takes your comfort into account and explains step by step what you can expect.

The recovery time is usually short. Small wounds often heal within a few days to two weeks, depending on the size and location of the lumps.

You do not need to stay at home or rest. You can simply continue your daily activities. We do advise against swimming, going to the sauna or intensive sport in the first days, as this can slow down recovery.

We always give you clear aftercare instructions, so the skin can heal calmly and well. Any redness or scab usually disappears on its own.

In most cases the skin heals well and hardly any scar remains. The wounds are small and we work with fine instruments that damage the skin as little as possible.

Do you have sensitive skin or a tendency to scarring? Then we discuss this beforehand during the consultation. That way we can tailor the treatment and aftercare to it.

Good wound care is important for a good final result. We always advise you on how best to care for the skin after the procedure, so the chance of visible scars stays minimal.

Yes, it is certainly possible to have several lumps removed in one treatment. During the consultation we assess how many lumps there are and where they are located.

We then agree together on what is feasible in one session. In many cases we can treat several lumps one after another, without you having to come back.

If there are many lumps or they are in sensitive places, we may choose to split the treatment. Everything is done in consultation with you, with attention to comfort and safety.

A removed lump usually does not grow back, because it is removed completely. However, a new lump may develop elsewhere on the skin, especially if you are prone to them.

The cause of many benign skin lumps is often genetic or hormonal, and therefore difficult to prevent. Fortunately, these lumps can again be removed well and safely.

During the consultation we also discuss how you can keep your skin healthy and what to look out for. That way you know what to do if something develops again in the future.
