Lower eyelid surgery

Lower eyelid surgery is a common cosmetic procedure performed to eliminate excess skin, puffiness and wrinkles under the eyes. This gives you a fresher and more rested-looking look.

The treatment often takes place after an upper eyelid correction has already been performed. Under local anesthesia, the doctor at our clinic removes excess skin and possibly fatty tissue. Although the procedure takes place on an outpatient basis with a short recovery time, it is associated with slightly more symptoms than the upper eyelid correction.

During an intake interview, the procedure will be explained. This takes place at our clinic in Haarlem or via a video interview at a time convenient for you.

The treatment takes about 1.5 hours and a week of rest is recommended for recovery. After a week, the stitches are removed and the treatment is finished. The final result is not visible for about 6 weeks.

The treatment process

Drs. D Jairath

My name is David Jairath, I have been a specialized plastic surgeon since 2004. I completed my studies in Medicine at the University of Amsterdam, here I also obtained my specialization as a plastic surgeon.

During my training, I did internships at home and abroad to further develop my skills. Here the focus was on fields such as reconstructive and cosmetic surgery.

After my training I started working at the Spaarne Hospital, here I was involved in reconstructions and plastic surgery. I also gained experience with lower eyelid corrections, among other things.

In the following years, I further specialized in non-invasive cosmetic treatments, including lower eyelid surgery, at a private clinic.

I now use the knowledge and experience I have gained here at Kliniek het Bolwerk. Here I focus on achieving optimal results with lower eyelid corrections.

Frequently Asked Questions

As with other procedures, there are risks associated with surgery. However, our experienced specialist takes every precaution to minimize them.

A possible risk is that the eye contour after the procedure is asymmetrical or slightly different from your wishes. This is very rare because our doctor is very precise.

Sometimes extra swelling or blue discoloration may last longer than normal. Incidentally, our careful aftercare ensures that this will go away on its own.

Sensation in the area under the eyes may decrease temporarily after surgery. This rarely occurs for more than a few months.

Extremely rarely, scarring or other tissue abnormalities may occur. However, our specialist has years of experience in preventing them.

Recovery occurs in several stages. Immediately after the procedure, there is swelling and blue discoloration around the eyes. This usually subsides after 2-3 days.

During the first week, you are advised to take it easy. Slight headaches and sensitivity are normal. The wounds heal during this period. Cooling contributes to recovery.

After about 7-10 days, the major swelling is gone. However, the area may still be slightly sensitive. Light activities such as reading or working at the computer are possible again.

After 2-3 weeks, the swelling process is almost over. Any remaining swelling or bruising will slowly disappear completely. Sport can be resumed, provided it is not too intense.

Complete results are visible after 6-8 weeks, although the skin may look duller for some time. What you can do is massage your skin with cream to promote the healing process.

Sometimes it takes several months for all sensitivity to disappear. For questions during recovery, please contact us.

A cosmetic lower eyelid correction, in which only the appearance is improved, is not covered under insured care for most basic insurance plans. This is true even if there is a slight excess of skin or fat.

However, if there is a medical necessity, an exception can be made. For example, in the case of:

  • Severe fold or roll accumulation with vision impairment or eye problems
  • Skin conditions that hinder recovery
  • Inflammation or eye lens abnormalities.
  • An exception may also be considered for psychological complaints due to appearance.

When in doubt, seek advice from us and your insurer. If necessary, get a second opinion on the need.

Sometimes additional insurance coverage is available. There is also the possibility of paying a portion yourself.

During the consultation, our specialist will check if your health condition is suitable for the procedure. Important tips for preparation:

  • Quitting smoking less than 6 weeks before surgery increases the risk.
  • Certain medications, such as blood thinners, can cause complications.
  • Please consult with us at least 2 weeks in advance.
  • Maintain a healthy lifestyle in the weeks before surgery. Eat healthy and get plenty of exercise.
  • Keep a record of your medical history and bring it with you to the consultation.
  • If necessary, schedule extra rest before surgery and drink plenty of water.
  • Arrange transportation home and help with tasks in the first few days after surgery.
