What can you expect from the treatment?

During a personal consultation, we look together at your skin type, the nature of the pigmentation spots and your wishes. Based on this, we draw up a treatment plan that suits your situation. This may consist of a skin-improving treatment, such as a medical peel, or another technique aimed at fading pigmentation spots.

The treatment is carried out at our clinic in Haarlem, in a safe and relaxed setting. Depending on the chosen method, the treatment usually takes 20 to 30 minutes. Afterwards, you can usually go straight home.

Your skin may be temporarily somewhat sensitive, red or flaky. This is part of the recovery and disappears by itself. You often see improvement within a few days to a week. We guide you carefully through the aftercare, so that your skin can recover calmly and well.

Who is the treatment suitable for?

Pigmentation spot treatment is suitable for people who are bothered by dark discolouration of the skin, such as age spots, sun spots or pigmentation spots after inflammation. These are often in visible places such as the face, neck, décolletage or hands.

During the consultation, we check whether the treatment can be applied safely and effectively in your situation too. You are eligible when:

  • The pigmentation spots are superficial and well defined
  • Your skin type is suitable for a chemical peel or a similar method
  • You have no active skin inflammation or small wounds in the area to be treated
  • You have realistic expectations about the result

Not sure whether treatment makes sense for you? During the consultation, you always receive honest and expert advice.

Frequently asked questions about pigmentation spot removal

The treatment is usually well tolerated. With some methods, you feel a brief burning or tingling sensation during or shortly after the treatment. This usually fades quickly. If a more intensive peel or treatment is chosen, we discuss in advance whether anaesthetic is needed. In any case, you do not need to worry about prolonged pain afterwards.

That depends on the chosen treatment. After a mild treatment, your skin has often settled again after a few days. With more intensive treatments, such as a deeper peel, your skin may be red and start to flake slightly. You usually see clear recovery within a week. We always give you tailored advice about what to expect and how best to care for your skin.

Many clients see improvement after just one treatment. The skin looks fresher and pigmentation spots gradually fade. Sometimes several treatments are needed for an optimal result. During the consultation, we discuss realistic expectations based on your skin type and the kind of pigment.

In principle, yes, but we recommend avoiding direct sunlight and protecting your skin well with a high SPF. After the treatment, the skin is more sensitive to UV radiation, and good sun protection prevents new pigmentation spots from forming or existing ones from returning.

Treatments for pigmentation spots are generally considered cosmetic care and are not reimbursed by basic health insurance. In some cases there may be a medical indication, for example with post-inflammatory pigmentation. If in doubt, contact your health insurer or discuss it during the consultation.
