The treatment process for eyelid surgery

About Dr David Jairath

Dr David Jairath has been working as a plastic surgeon for more than fifteen years. After studying medicine at the University of Amsterdam, he specialised in plastic and reconstructive surgery. He gained experience in the Netherlands and abroad and worked for many years at the Spaarne Gasthuis, where his focus included trauma care and reconstructive surgery.

Over the years, his passion for cosmetic treatments grew. Today, at Kliniek het Bolwerk, he performs procedures such as eyelid surgery with great care and precision. His approach is personal, honest and calm, always with a view to a natural end result that suits you.

Frequently asked questions

No, the treatment is generally not painful. During the procedure we use local anaesthetic, so you do not feel anything. Many clients experience it as a relaxed treatment, partly because we take the time to put you at ease.

After the procedure you may have some tightness or a bruised feeling around the eyes, but this is temporary. With enough rest and cooling, your body recovers quickly and any pain afterwards is easy to tolerate.

In the first few days after the procedure you may have some swelling and bruising. This is a normal reaction and usually subsides within a week. After about a week we remove the stitches and you can return to light daily activities.

Most people have fully recovered after two weeks. The final result is often clearly visible after two to three weeks, once the skin has settled and any discolouration has faded.

The small incisions are made precisely in the natural crease of the eyelid, so scars are barely visible once healed. We also use fine stitches for a subtle result.

With good wound care and our aftercare advice, the scars usually heal well and inconspicuously. If needed, we also recommend using a scar cream to further support healing.

Light work, such as reading or working at a computer, is often possible again after a few days. For more strenuous exertion such as sport or heavy lifting, we advise waiting at least ten to fourteen days.

We always discuss your personal situation at the follow-up appointment, so you know exactly when you can safely do what again.

Eyelid surgery is usually considered cosmetic and is therefore not covered by basic health insurance. Only when excess skin genuinely obstructs your vision may (partial) reimbursement be possible in some cases.

We recommend discussing this with your health insurer beforehand. During the consultation we look at whether your situation might qualify on medical grounds.

You will often see a difference soon after the procedure, but expect some swelling and discolouration in the first week. This is part of the normal healing process.

The final result, a fresh and natural look, usually becomes clearly visible after two to three weeks. By then the skin has calmed down and you can really start enjoying the result.
