Breast augmentation surgery is a good method to change the volume and shape of a breast that is too small or sagging.
In this procedure, a silicone prosthesis is placed in a cavity under the mammary gland or pectoral muscle. This is done during a one-night hospitalization. The surgery takes place under general anesthesia. You should allow about six weeks for recovery after the procedure.

If the breasts are too small in relation to the rest of the body, breast augmentation may be a solution. This may be the case with underdevelopment of the breasts that has existed since adolescence, possibly combined with asymmetry between the two breasts.

Silicone breast implants have been used since the 1960s because of their biocompatibility, which means that the body does not exhibit unwanted reactions. If there is a risk of impaired wound healing, such as with diabetes or medication, or if you are obviously overweight, it may be wise in some cases to forgo surgery. The plastic surgeon will advise you about this.
One reason to forgo breast surgery is if your expectations do not match the plastic surgeon’s options. This is discussed in detail during the exploratory consultation.
Breast augmentation surgery can also have drawbacks. The scar is usually on the underside of the breast and is kept as small as possible. Usually the scar is about 5 cm long. How a scar will develop over time cannot be predicted in advance. It can range from a barely visible line to a red itchy scar.
After the procedure, there may also be decreased sensation in the nipples or sensation in the nipples may disappear completely. In principle, it is possible to breastfeed normally after breast augmentation.
We would also like to point out that there may be a slight left-right difference between the two breasts after surgery. This is usually the case before surgery. A small left/right difference before surgery can give a larger difference after breast augmentation.
We cannot guarantee a particular bra cup size after surgery because it varies quite a bit from one bra manufacturer to another. Cup sizes do not always fall the same between different manufacturers.
Undesirable effects of breast surgery include post-operative bleeding and disruptions in wound healing, which can cause infections. We make every effort to minimize the risk of unwanted effects.
In the longer term, problems can arise from so-called capsular contracture. The formation of a capsule around the prosthesis is a natural process. Unfortunately, in some people this capsule develops into a hard capsule after years, which can cause pain and a change in the shape of the breast. Then a new procedure is needed in which this capsule is loosened and often a new implant is placed.

Breast augmentation surgery is currently not reimbursed by Dutch health insurance companies. If there is a disposition disorder or a difference in size, of at least one cup size between the left and right breast, an application for reimbursement can be made by the attending plastic surgeon.
Despite this application, the insurer retains the right to reject reimbursement for this procedure. In all other cases, the procedure is considered cosmetic and you must pay for it yourself.

This procedure is performed under general anesthesia, after which you will stay in the clinic overnight.
Despite our care, errors may occur in our fee list. Therefore, you cannot derive any rights from this rate list.
We recommend wearing a good supportive post-operative bra after the procedure, without underwire at the bottom. A sports top may also be a good solution. We can help you find a good bra.
The bra is put on as soon as possible after surgery. Sometimes already in the operating room, sometimes in the recovery room. Also read the answer to the first question, “What kind of bra can I wear after surgery?”.
Breast augmentation is a real operation lasting 60 to 90 minutes. For your safety and comfort, the surgery is performed under general anesthesia. Because something unexpected can always happen after the procedure, it is wise to stay in the hospital so that pain relief is well taken care of. Our staff will do their best to make you as comfortable as possible.
Kliniek het Bolwerk wants to work as safely as possible and not risk your health. In addition, the treatment should be as comfortable as possible for you. A modern anesthesia, as performed in cooperation with our anesthesiologists, is many times safer and more comfortable than a procedure under local anesthesia with a sedative. A procedure in which you have to lie still on an operating table for 90 minutes for the best result is hardly tenable.
