An upper eyelid correction is one of the most commonly performed plastic surgery procedures to give the eyes a fresher appearance. During a personal consultation, we will explain the outpatient procedure, which takes place under local anesthesia.
The treatment is performed in our clinic and takes about an hour. After the treatment, you will be asked to take it easy for about 3 days. The eyes may be slightly swollen and blue. After this period, you can resume light activities.
Prior to the eyelid correction, an intake follows in which will be explained how the procedure will be performed. The initial consultation can take place at Kliniek het Bolwerk in Haarlem or during a video consultation at a time of your choosing.

With proper planning, your post-surgery recovery will go smoothly. Therefore, we are sure to give you advice for a smooth return after surgery.
As the day of surgery approaches, it is a good idea to check the following:
Have you planned enough rest for after surgery?
Are all the groceries and help arranged?
Has transportation been arranged to go home after surgery?
Do you have sunglasses ready for after?
We are counting down to tomorrow. Make sure you don’t have anything else to take care of. Then you can relax on the day of the upper eyelid surgery.
Today is the day! Shower well before your visit and come to our clinic 15 minutes beforehand. The upper eyelid surgery takes about an hour. After that, you will stay for a while for observation.
Have someone ready to pick you up afterwards. For the first few days, it is important to get plenty of rest at home. Cool the area around your eyes regularly.
Our specialist explains the recovery process. Take it easy and follow the advice. That way, the area above your eyes will heal optimally.

Over the next few days, the area above your eyes may swell slightly and turn blue. This is normal and will gradually disappear.
Leave the stitches and bandages in place to keep the wound above your eyes closed. Take it very easy for the first few days.
After about 3 days, you can carefully resume light activities, such as working at a desk.
Should you have any concerns about your recovery, please do not hesitate to contact us. Our team is always ready with advice.
At the appointment in a few weeks, we will discuss how everything is going. There may still be some swelling or blueness, which is just part of the healing process.
Use a scar cream regularly, such as vitamin E. This supports the recovery of the skin above your eyes.
Handle makeup carefully to allow everything to heal sufficiently. Also avoid bright sun around your eyes.
The specialist will regularly check that everything is healing properly. But you can rest assured that after an upper eyelid surgery, you will soon be able to function optimally again.
After two weeks, you can resume all normal activities, including sports. By then, the remaining swelling above your eyes will have completely disappeared.
So you can enjoy a sleek, refreshed eye contour thanks to upper eyelid surgery. Your eyes will look young and rested again.
If you would like another consultation in the future, please call us. For now, the recovery process has been successfully completed.
The final result will not be visible for about 6 weeks, though. After that, we hope you enjoy your new, natural look.
After 10-15 years, excess skin may reappear in the area around the top of the eyes. In that case, a second upper eyelid surgery may provide relief.
Contact us for an intake interview. Together we will look at what the best possible options are. Our team will be happy to prepare you for this.
Until then, we hope you enjoy the results of your first surgery. Should any complaints arise in the future, please do not hesitate to contact us.
My name is Dr. David Jairath, I have been a specialized plastic surgeon since 2004. I completed my medical studies at the University of Amsterdam, where I also obtained my specialization as a plastic surgeon.
During my training, I did internships at home and abroad to further develop my skills in reconstructive and cosmetic surgery.
After my training, I started working at the Spaarne Hospital, where I dealt with reconstructions and plastic surgery. I also gained experience with upper eyelid corrections.
In the years that followed, I specialized in non-invasive cosmetic treatments, including upper eyelid surgery, at a private clinic.
I now put the knowledge and experience I gained here to use at Clinic the Bolwerk. Here I focus on achieving good results with upper eyelid corrections.

I was very well looked after, and everything was explained to me step by step. The final result is exactly what I had hoped for, and I definitely do not regret the treatment. Recovery during the first week was quite tough, but after just one week I was already healing very well. The end result is exactly what I had envisioned for years. I am very satisfied.

I am very satisfied with the treatment at Kliniek het Bolwerk in Haarlem. Dr David Jairath took all the time needed to explain everything clearly and carried out the procedure with great expertise. The treatment of my seborrhoeic wart (POK) went smoothly and without any issues. His friendly and calm manner immediately put me at ease. The communication by email, with clear instructions before and after the treatment, was also very helpful. Absolutely recommended!

An upper eyelid correction is a plastic surgery procedure to rejuvenate the area around the upper eyelids. Over the years, excess skin, fat and sometimes muscle tissue can accumulate here, making the eye look tired and listless. During an upper eyelid surgery, the plastic surgeon removes this excess tissue.
The skin above the eyelids is also sometimes tightened slightly. This results in a fresher and tighter upper eye contour that looks younger. In addition, in some cases, the field of vision may also improve slightly because there is less tissue in the way. An upper eyelid correction takes about an hour and, in most cases, proceeds without complications.
Recovery after an upper eyelid surgery is in stages. Immediately after the procedure, you will notice swelling and blue discoloration in the area above your eyes. This usually subsides within a few days.
For the first week, it is important to take it easy. Slight headache or sensitivity is normal during the healing process. Cooling with ice packs can help support recovery.
After only about a week, the major swelling will be gone. Although the area above your eyes may still be sensitive, you can resume light activities such as reading or working at the computer.
Within 2-3 weeks, the remaining swelling will be almost completely gone. Any bruising will slowly disappear. You can resume light sports.
Full results will be visible after 6-8 weeks, although your skin may remain somewhat darker for some time. Massage with cream will promote the healing process.
Cosmetic surgery to improve one’s appearance is usually not covered by basic insurance. This includes a small excess of skin or fat above the eyes.
Psychological complaints due to appearance can sometimes make an exception as well.
Seek advice from us and your insurer regarding possible reimbursement. If necessary, a second opinion can be sought on medical necessity.
Sometimes an additional policy provides coverage; otherwise, part of the procedure may be self-pay.
After surgery to remove excess skin and fat above your eyelids, some degree of discomfort during the recovery process is normal. You will usually experience slight swelling and blue discoloration in the area around the eyes for the first few days. This is because small wounds need to heal after the procedure. It is important to cool well with ice during this period, this helps reduce swelling and discoloration.
For the first week after surgery, it is recommended that you take it easy. Slight headaches or sensitivity above the eyes are normal side effects. Therefore, follow the doctor’s advice carefully, for example by not bending or lifting.
After about a week, the major swelling will be gone, although the area may remain sensitive. In the second week, this subsides further and light activities can often be resumed, such as reading or working at the computer.
The final result with a tight and refreshed upper eye contour is usually visible after 6 weeks. In some cases, the recovery process may take a little longer.
