Lower eyelid surgery is a common cosmetic procedure performed to eliminate excess skin, puffiness and wrinkles under the eyes. This gives you a fresher and more rested-looking look.
The treatment often takes place after an upper eyelid correction has already been performed. Under local anesthesia, the doctor at our clinic removes excess skin and possibly fatty tissue. Although the procedure takes place on an outpatient basis with a short recovery time, it is associated with slightly more symptoms than the upper eyelid correction.
During an intake interview, the procedure will be explained. This takes place at our clinic in Haarlem or via a video interview at a time convenient for you.
The treatment takes about 1.5 hours and a week of rest is recommended for recovery. After a week, the stitches are removed and the treatment is finished. The final result is not visible for about 6 weeks.

We are counting down to tomorrow. Make sure you have nothing more to take care of so you can relax.
Today is the time! Shower in the morning and come to our clinic 15 minutes beforehand. The lower eyelid surgery takes about an hour. After that, you will stay for a while for observation.
Have someone ready to pick you up afterwards. For the first few days, it is important to rest at home. Cool the area around your eye regularly.
Our specialist will then explain the recovery process to you. Take it easy and follow the advice. That way, the area will heal optimally.
We wish you the best of luck with lower eyelid surgery today. Trust our team for great results!
Over the next few days, the area under your eyes may swell slightly and turn blue. This is normal and will gradually subside.
Leave the stitches and bandages in place; they keep the wound closed. Take it very easy for the first few days.
After 3 days, you can carefully resume light activities, such as working at a desk.
If you’re worried about your recovery, don’t hesitate to contact us. Our team is ready to offer advice.
On the appointed date you will return for the removal of the sutures. There may still be slight swelling, but otherwise your recovery is steadily improving.
Apply a cream with vitamin E on the lower eyelid surgery scars 5-6 times a day.
You may use light makeup on your eye area again. Just make sure you don’t get bright sun rays directly on your eyelid.
Our specialist will be happy to check how your lower eyelid surgery recovery is going. Have confidence that you will be fine!
After two weeks, you can resume all normal activities, including sports. Any remaining swelling will be gone by then.
Enjoy your new lower eye contour thanks to lower eyelid surgery!
If you have any questions later, please let us know. For now, the recovery process is complete.
We hope you enjoy your fresh, tighter area around your under eye.
After 10-15 years, fatty deposits may reappear in the lower eye area. A second lower eyelid correction can then provide relief.
Contact us for a consultation. Together we will look at the best next steps. Our team will be happy to prepare you for this.
Until then, you will hopefully enjoy the results of your first eyelid surgery. Should you experience any complaints in the future, please do not hesitate to contact us.
My name is David Jairath, I have been a specialized plastic surgeon since 2004. I completed my studies in Medicine at the University of Amsterdam, here I also obtained my specialization as a plastic surgeon.
During my training, I did internships at home and abroad to further develop my skills. Here the focus was on fields such as reconstructive and cosmetic surgery.
After my training I started working at the Spaarne Hospital, here I was involved in reconstructions and plastic surgery. I also gained experience with lower eyelid corrections, among other things.
In the following years, I further specialized in non-invasive cosmetic treatments, including lower eyelid surgery, at a private clinic.
I now use the knowledge and experience I have gained here at Kliniek het Bolwerk. Here I focus on achieving optimal results with lower eyelid corrections.

I was very well looked after, and everything was explained to me step by step. The final result is exactly what I had hoped for, and I definitely do not regret the treatment. Recovery during the first week was quite tough, but after just one week I was already healing very well. The end result is exactly what I had envisioned for years. I am very satisfied.

Fibroma removal
I am very satisfied with the treatment at Kliniek het Bolwerk in Haarlem. Dr David Jairath took all the time needed to explain everything clearly and carried out the procedure with great expertise. The treatment of my seborrhoeic wart (POK) went smoothly and without any issues. His friendly and calm manner immediately put me at ease. The communication by email, with clear instructions before and after the treatment, was also very helpful. Absolutely recommended!

Only an initial consultation that does not lead to treatment.
As with other procedures, there are risks associated with surgery. However, our experienced specialist takes every precaution to minimize them.
A possible risk is that the eye contour after the procedure is asymmetrical or slightly different from your wishes. This is very rare because our doctor is very precise.
Sometimes extra swelling or blue discoloration may last longer than normal. Incidentally, our careful aftercare ensures that this will go away on its own.
Sensation in the area under the eyes may decrease temporarily after surgery. This rarely occurs for more than a few months.
Extremely rarely, scarring or other tissue abnormalities may occur. However, our specialist has years of experience in preventing them.
Recovery occurs in several stages. Immediately after the procedure, there is swelling and blue discoloration around the eyes. This usually subsides after 2-3 days.
During the first week, you are advised to take it easy. Slight headaches and sensitivity are normal. The wounds heal during this period. Cooling contributes to recovery.
After about 7-10 days, the major swelling is gone. However, the area may still be slightly sensitive. Light activities such as reading or working at the computer are possible again.
After 2-3 weeks, the swelling process is almost over. Any remaining swelling or bruising will slowly disappear completely. Sport can be resumed, provided it is not too intense.
Complete results are visible after 6-8 weeks, although the skin may look duller for some time. What you can do is massage your skin with cream to promote the healing process.
Sometimes it takes several months for all sensitivity to disappear. For questions during recovery, please contact us.
A cosmetic lower eyelid correction, in which only the appearance is improved, is not covered under insured care for most basic insurance plans. This is true even if there is a slight excess of skin or fat.
However, if there is a medical necessity, an exception can be made. For example, in the case of:
When in doubt, seek advice from us and your insurer. If necessary, get a second opinion on the need.
Sometimes additional insurance coverage is available. There is also the possibility of paying a portion yourself.
During the consultation, our specialist will check if your health condition is suitable for the procedure. Important tips for preparation:
