A labia correction is a commonly performed procedure within Kliniek het Bolwerk. This procedure involves reducing the length of the labia minora (the inner labia).
It is the most commonly performed vaginal rejuvenation surgery worldwide. A correction of the labia can be considered for several reasons. For example, because you do not like the labia aesthetically (size or shape) but also if there is physical discomfort.
Thus, it can relieve symptoms women experience such as “twisting and pulling” of the labia, itching and irritation. It is also common for them to cause complaints in sexual life. Sometimes a labia correction is performed to correct the anatomically incorrect position of the labia after childbirth.
A labia correction is performed on an outpatient basis under local anesthesia. An anesthetic ointment is applied first, followed by final punctures that provide anesthesia. Recovery after the procedure is quick.

It may be desirable to perform this procedure because one does not like the labia. They may also be too large due to predisposition or changed after pregnancy and childbirth.
Common complaints include discomfort when cycling and playing sports or wearing tight clothing, for example. Furthermore, it is common to have complaints in sexual life. Shape changes can also occur after childbirth.
The purpose of the procedure is to shrink the labia minora so that they no longer protrude below the labia majora. This procedure can be performed to reduce asymmetry if one labia is longer than the other.
It is also common to reduce the length of both labia. This prevents the labia from twisting, pulling or being visible in clothing.
Before treatment, try to be in as good a condition as possible.
This promotes recovery and minimizes the risk of unwanted effects.
During the first visit to the plastic surgeon, an exploratory discussion will take place about your complaints and wishes regarding the shape and size of the labia.
It is important that you can clearly state what you expect from the procedure. There will also be a physical examination, after which the real possibilities of the procedure will be explained.
It then explains how the procedure is performed and what the advantages and disadvantages of the procedure may be.
A labia correction is performed on an outpatient basis under local anesthesia. An anesthetic ointment is applied first, followed by final injections that provide anesthesia.
If you prefer the labia correction to be performed under general anesthesia, this is possible, but there is an additional cost for the anesthesia. The procedure will then be performed elsewhere in a rented operating room.
Before surgery, we take another look at the labia together and make a plan for the correction. If you have any questions, they can be asked at this time.
This is followed by the mandatory safety questionnaire to make sure everything is done correctly. After carefully annotating the excess tissue, anesthesia is administered with a few injections.
The tissue is then removed, after which the labia are reshaped. The skin is then closed with dissolvable sutures. The treatment takes between 45 and 60 minutes.
It is normal to have some blood loss one to two days after surgery. Especially on the day of surgery, it is important to cool the operated area regularly with ice compresses. This can prevent excessive swelling.
It is also important to rinse the area with lukewarm water after each use of the toilet. Postoperative pain is generally mild and, if necessary, can be treated well with a simple analgesic, such as paracetamol at a dose of 6x 500 mg (or 3x 1000 mg daily).
Walking and sitting may be somewhat uncomfortable for a few days. Generally, work can be resumed after two to four days.
For the first three to five weeks, try to avoid pressure on the labia, so activities involving a saddle should be postponed for a while. It is also wise to avoid penetrative sexual contact for the first three weeks.
The first checkup appointment usually takes place two weeks after surgery. It is not necessary to remove the stitches, as dissolvable sutures are used.
Obviously, a significant reduction in the size of the labia is achieved. A labia correction usually results in shorter labia that are no longer below the level of the major labia.
Most clients who experience symptoms due to their labia find relief after surgery. A labia reduction provides lasting results.
When scheduling a date for this procedure, your wishes will be considered as much as possible.
We aim to perform the initial consultation and treatment within three weeks.

This surgery is not performed if there are obvious health risks that could lead to the occurrence of complications. This can happen if you take certain medications, such as blood thinners or drugs that affect wound healing.
A labia correction should not be confused with female circumcision. This is a procedure that is not performed at Kliniek het Bolwerk.
As with any surgery, there is a risk of bleeding after a labia correction. Infections are rare.
The risk of these complications is very small. But if any of these problems occur, it will of course be treated appropriately.

I was very well looked after, and everything was explained to me step by step. The final result is exactly what I had hoped for, and I definitely do not regret the treatment. Recovery during the first week was quite tough, but after just one week I was already healing very well. The end result is exactly what I had envisioned for years. I am very satisfied.

Correction of the labia under local anesthesia
Only an initial consultation that does not lead to treatment.
A labia correction may be considered for functional complaints or insecurity about appearance. A consultation with the doctor will determine if a correction is appropriate.
Factors such as medical history, exact symptoms and desired outcome are discussed. Possible alternatives and risks are also discussed.
If the procedure can lead to improved well-being, it takes place under local anesthesia. Recovery takes several weeks. Our plastic surgeon can be contacted with any questions regarding the procedure. His expert judgment is focused on providing a careful approach.
The specific situation and wishes of the client are always considered. Together with the physician, the most appropriate approach can thus be determined.
After surgery, it is important to keep the wound area clean. Clean the area with lukewarm water after each bowel movement to prevent infection.
Showering or taking a bath is also allowed and helps keep the area clean. Be careful when washing and avoid using harsh soaps or products that can irritate the wound.
After washing, gently dry the area with a clean towel or allow it to air dry. Always follow your doctor’s instructions for the best aftercare.
In general, the plastic surgeon advises against sexual contact during the first 2-3 weeks after a labia correction.
This does not interfere with the healing process. Healing will be smoother this way.
During recovery, consult with the surgeon when you feel sufficiently recovered. Usually, gentle sexual activity is possible again after 2-3 weeks, provided you do not experience discomfort.
The individual situation is decisive. When in doubt, contact the plastic surgeon to discuss the situation. A good recovery is paramount.
It varies by insurance whether the cost of a labia correction is covered. It is therefore advisable to check with your insurer in advance.
Some insurers reimburse all or part of the cost if there is a medical necessity, such as the pain symptoms. They assess this on a case-by-case basis. There is often no reimbursement for purely cosmetic desires.
Contact your insurer to find out if and to what extent they will reimburse the costs in your situation. This way you know in advance where you stand in terms of reimbursement and avoid uncertainty afterwards. It is wise to arrange this in advance.
