What does botox do for teeth grinding?

What does this term mean?

Definitie

Botox can be used as a treatment for teeth grinding, also known as bruxism. By injecting botox into the chewing muscles, muscle activity is temporarily reduced. This decreases the force with which you clench your teeth, which can lead to less tension, less wear of the teeth and relief of symptoms.

Uitgebreide uitleg

What exactly is teeth grinding?

Teeth grinding is an unconscious habit in which you clench your teeth tightly together or slide them over each other. This often happens during sleep, but can also occur during the day, for example with tension or stress.

Many people do not notice it themselves straight away, but symptoms that may indicate teeth grinding include pain or fatigue in the jaw, tension headaches, sensitive or worn teeth and stiffness in the face on waking.

When these symptoms persist for a longer time, there may be overload of the jaw muscles and damage to the teeth.

How does botox work for teeth grinding?

In this treatment, a small amount of botox is injected into the masseter, the main chewing muscle. This muscle allows you to apply force when closing your jaw.

Botox temporarily reduces muscle strength, making clenching and grinding less intense. You can still eat and speak normally, but the excessive tension in the muscle decreases.

The aim of the treatment is not to disable the muscle completely, but to restore balance and reduce overload.

What can you expect after the treatment?

The effect of botox develops gradually. In the first few days you usually notice little difference, but after about two to four weeks the tension in the jaw decreases.

Many people experience:

  • less pressure on the jaw
  • fewer headaches
  • less wear from grinding
  • a more relaxed feeling on waking

The final result is usually clearly visible and noticeable after about six weeks.

How long does botox for teeth grinding last?

The effect of botox is temporary and lasts on average three to six months. After that, muscle activity gradually increases again.

With repeated treatments, the muscle can become less powerful, so that the effect lasts longer and the symptoms can decrease further.

Is botox a replacement for a mouth guard?

Botox can be a valuable addition, but does not always replace a mouth guard. A mouth guard protects your teeth against wear, while botox focuses on reducing muscle strength.

In many cases, a combination of both treatments is advised for an optimal result.

Are there any risks or side effects?

When the treatment is carried out by an experienced doctor, botox for teeth grinding is generally safe.

Possible side effects are mild swelling, redness or a bruise at the injection site. Sometimes you temporarily have less strength when chewing. These symptoms are usually mild and disappear by themselves.

Who is this treatment suitable for?

Botox may be suitable if you suffer from persistent teeth grinding, jaw clenching or tension in the jaw muscles. This treatment can also be considered for recurring headaches related to muscle tension.

A proper assessment by a doctor is important to determine whether botox is a suitable solution in your situation.

Does Kliniek het Bolwerk perform this treatment?

Kliniek het Bolwerk specialises in eyelid surgery and other surgical treatments. In addition, we selectively carry out botox treatments aimed at aesthetic applications.

However, botox treatments for teeth grinding, such as injections into the masseter muscle, are not part of our range of treatments.

We think it is important that you are well informed about the different options, so that you can make a well-considered choice that suits your situation.
