Couperose is a skin condition in which small, visible blood vessels appear just below the surface of the skin. This causes a red or pink discolouration of the skin, usually on the cheeks, nose and chin. The condition is not dangerous, but can be experienced as cosmetically bothersome.
How does couperose develop?
Couperose develops when small blood vessels in the skin become weaker and dilate. As a result, they remain permanently visible. This can be caused or worsened by various factors, including hereditary predisposition, excessive sun exposure, changes in temperature, alcohol, spicy food or sensitive skin.
The condition is more common in people with lighter skin and sometimes increases with age or due to hormonal changes.
What is the difference between couperose and rosacea?
Couperose and rosacea are often confused. Couperose refers specifically to the visible blood vessels in the skin. Rosacea is a broader chronic skin condition that can also involve persistent redness, spots and sensitive skin. Couperose can be part of rosacea, but does not have to be.
What can you do yourself?
A good skincare routine can help limit the symptoms. Use mild, non-irritating products and avoid harsh scrubs or products containing alcohol. Protect your skin every day with a sunscreen of at least SPF 30, even on cloudy days.
Avoid known triggers such as extreme cold or heat, alcohol and spicy food as much as possible. A gentle cleansing routine and a soothing moisturiser can contribute to calmer-looking skin.
Which professional treatments are available?
There are various treatments that can help reduce visible blood vessels. Laser treatments and IPL (intense pulsed light) are commonly used methods that treat the blood vessels in a targeted way. Vascular lasers have also been developed specifically for this type of skin problem.
Which treatment suits best depends on skin type, the severity of the symptoms and other personal factors. A specialist can give appropriate advice after assessing the skin.
Are there any risks or side effects?
Professional treatments such as laser or IPL can cause temporary side effects, such as redness, mild swelling or a burning sensation. These usually disappear within a few days. Good preparation and aftercare are important for a safe result.
