What is rosacea?

What does this term mean?

Definitie

Rosacea is a chronic skin condition characterised by persistent redness in the face, visible small blood vessels and, in some cases, spots or thickening of the skin. The condition mainly affects the centre of the face, such as the cheeks, nose, chin and forehead.

Rosacea is not contagious and not dangerous, but it can be experienced as a burden and affect self-confidence.

How does rosacea develop?

The exact cause of rosacea is not fully known. It is thought that a combination of factors plays a role, including an overactive immune system, genetic predisposition and disorders of the blood vessels in the skin.

The condition can be triggered or worsened by external factors such as heat, sunlight, alcohol, spicy food, physical exertion or stress.

Which forms of rosacea are there?

Rosacea has various forms. The most common is the form in which redness and visible small blood vessels are most prominent. Another form resembles acne, with spots and red bumps. Rosacea can also cause thickening of the skin, often on the nose. Finally, there is a form that affects the eyes and eyelids.

How is rosacea treated?

Rosacea cannot be cured, but the symptoms can be well controlled. The approach depends on the form and severity of the condition.

Skincare plays a major role. Use mild, non-irritating products and protect the skin every day with a sunscreen of at least SPF 30. Avoid known triggers as much as possible.

For persistent symptoms there are medical options, such as prescription creams, antibiotics or laser treatments for visible small blood vessels. A dermatologist or GP can advise on the right treatment.

When should you see a doctor?

If you have persistent redness, spots or other skin symptoms that could indicate rosacea, it is wise to consult a doctor or dermatologist. Early treatment can prevent the symptoms from getting worse.
