Threadlift

What does this term mean?

Definitie

A threadlift, also known as a thread lift, is a minimally invasive cosmetic procedure in which dissolvable sutures are inserted under the skin to subtly lift and tighten the face or other parts of the body. This procedure offers an alternative to traditional facelifts, with a shorter recovery time and fewer risks.

What is a threadlift?

A threadlift is a non-surgical aesthetic procedure used to correct mild to moderate skin laxity by placing dissolvable threads under the skin. These threads have small cones or barbs that attach to the subcutaneous tissue, gently pulling the skin upwards and stabilising it. Over time, the threads also stimulate collagen production, which contributes to longer-lasting firming of the skin.

How does a threadlift work?

During a threadlift procedure, the threads are inserted under the skin using a needle or cannula. The threads are strategically placed in the areas that need lifting, such as the cheeks, jawline, neck or eyebrows. Once the threads are in place, the doctor pulls them to lift and tighten the skin. The procedure can be carried out under local anaesthetic and usually takes no longer than an hour.

The threads are absorbed by the body over time, but before that happens, they stimulate collagen production around the treated areas. This collagen helps to firm and support the skin naturally, even after the threads have dissolved.

What are the benefits of a threadlift?

A threadlift offers several benefits, including:

  • Minimally invasive: Because it is a non-surgical procedure, a threadlift does not require large incisions, which means less scarring, swelling and bruising.
  • Short recovery time: The recovery time after a threadlift is much shorter than after traditional facelifts. Most patients can resume their normal activities within a few days.
  • Natural-looking result: The subtle lift achieved with a threadlift creates a natural appearance without the “overdone” effect.
  • Collagen production: In addition to lifting the skin, the threadlift stimulates the natural production of collagen, which contributes to an overall improvement in skin texture and firmness.
  • Low risk: The procedure has a low risk of complications compared with more invasive procedures such as a surgical facelift.

Risks and considerations

Although a threadlift is considered safe, there are some risks and considerations:

  • Temporary results: The results of a threadlift are not permanent and usually last one to two years, depending on the materials used and individual ageing processes.
  • Asymmetry: Some asymmetry can occur if the threads are not placed evenly or if they shift.
  • Infection: As with any procedure in which the skin is punctured, there is a risk of infection, although this is rare.
  • Lumps or irregularities: In some cases, the threads can be visible or palpable under the skin, especially in people with thin skin.

Recovery after a threadlift

Recovery after a threadlift is generally quick and straightforward. Patients may experience some swelling, bruising or discomfort immediately after the procedure, but this usually disappears within a few days. It is recommended to avoid strenuous exercise, facial movements and pressure on the treated areas during the first weeks after the procedure. Follow the doctor's aftercare instructions to achieve the best result and prevent complications.

What is the difference between a threadlift and other facelift procedures?

A threadlift differs from traditional facelift procedures in both technique and result. Whereas a traditional facelift is an extensive surgical procedure in which excess skin and fat are removed and the underlying structures are adjusted, a threadlift offers a less invasive option with more subtle results. A threadlift is ideal for patients with mild to moderate skin laxity who want rejuvenation without the recovery time and risks of an operation.

A threadlift is an attractive option for people looking for a quick, safe and effective way to subtly improve their appearance. It offers a temporary but noticeable rejuvenation with minimal downtime, making it a popular choice for people who are not ready for, or do not want to opt for, a surgical facelift.
