What is the difference between botox and fillers?

If you have ever delved into cosmetic treatments, you have undoubtedly come across the terms botox and fillers. They are often mentioned in the same breath, as if they concern one and the same treatment. Yet botox and fillers are totally different in action, application and result.

Whether you suffer from wrinkles, loss of volume or simply want to look a little fresher, it is important to know which product does what. In this blog we explain in an accessible way what the difference is between botox and fillers, so that you can better estimate which treatment suits your wishes.

Two products, two functions

Botox and fillers both have the aim of making your face look fresher, more youthful or relaxed. But the way in which they do that is completely different.

Botox is a muscle-relaxing agent. It works on the muscles that cause wrinkles, and ensures that these are temporarily less active. The result? The skin above those muscles relaxes, which makes wrinkles fade.

Fillers, on the other hand, are filling agents. They are used to supplement lost volume, strengthen facial contours or fill up fine lines. Fillers literally give ‘substance’ back to the skin.

So where botox works on muscles, a filler works on the volume of the skin itself.

When do you choose botox?

Botox is mainly used for so-called dynamic wrinkles. These are wrinkles that arise from muscle tension. Think, for example, of the frown line between the eyebrows, horizontal lines on the forehead or crow’s feet beside the eyes.

In the beginning these wrinkles are only visible when you frown, laugh or are surprised. But over time they remain visible at rest too. Botox ensures that the muscles that cause these wrinkles temporarily relax, which makes the skin smooth out.

Botox is also used preventively. By slowing down the muscles a little at an early stage, you prevent wrinkles from settling more deeply into the skin. That is why you increasingly see younger people also choosing a light botox treatment to prevent future wrinkles.

When do you choose fillers?

Fillers are intended to supplement volume or improve certain facial features. As you get older, your skin loses not only elasticity, but also fat and moisture. This can make your face look a little more tired or sunken, even when you actually feel perfectly fine.

Typical applications of fillers are:

  • Filling up the nasolabial fold or marionette lines
  • Restoring volume in the cheeks or cheekbones
  • Enhancing or making the lips fuller
  • Improving the jawline or chin
  • Filling up tear troughs or bags under the eyes

Fillers are also used for asymmetry in the face or for small contour corrections, such as refining the nose or firming up the jawline. The nice thing is that the effect of a filler is immediately visible.

How long do botox and fillers work?

An important difference between botox and fillers also lies in the duration of the effect. Botox works on average three to four months. After that the muscle activity slowly returns and the wrinkles can become visible again. Many people choose to repeat the treatment two to three times a year.

Fillers usually remain visible a little longer. Depending on the product, the treated area and your own metabolism, the durability lies between six and twelve months. In zones with little movement, such as the cheekbones, the effect often lasts longer than in dynamic zones such as the lips.

Can botox and fillers be combined?

Absolutely. In many cases a combination of both treatments is actually the best solution. Take, for example, deep frown lines. Botox relaxes the muscle that causes the frown, but if the line has already become deeply ingrained, a filler can help to fill up that depth. Together they then create a natural, smooth result.

With facial rejuvenation too, both products are often used. Botox provides relaxation and an open look, while fillers restore the contours and the volume. As a result you look fresher, without it appearing unnatural.

It is all about balance and customisation. An experienced doctor looks at your face as a whole and determines on that basis what suits best.

Does it hurt?

Both botox and fillers are injected with fine needles. Most people experience this as well tolerable. Botox injections usually feel like small pricks and take only a few minutes. With fillers a numbing cream is often used, and many fillers also already contain a bit of anaesthetic in the product itself. A treatment usually takes 20 to 30 minutes.

After the treatment you may experience some redness, swelling or a bruise. This usually fades within a few days. You can almost always carry on with your daily activities right away.

Is the result natural?

That depends strongly on how and by whom you are treated. At Kliniek het Bolwerk we always strive for a result that suits your face, your appearance and your wishes.

We deliberately opt for a subtle and balanced approach, in which we work with small quantities and precise placement. This way we preserve your facial expression and character, and we ensure that you simply look like yourself — only then a little fresher and more rested.

The aim is not for others to see that you have had something done, but for them to notice that you feel comfortable in your own skin.

Finally

Botox and fillers are two different treatments that each contribute in their own way to a fresh and natural appearance. Botox works on muscles and is mainly suitable for wrinkles caused by movement. Fillers supplement volume and correct sagging, asymmetry or fine lines.

Which treatment suits best depends entirely on your face and your wishes. Sometimes one treatment is enough, sometimes a combination of both is actually the most effective.

Do you want to know what suits you? Then a personal consultation is the first step. During this conversation we look at your face together, listen to your wishes and give honest advice. This way you know exactly what to expect, and you can make the right choice with peace of mind.
